You should use the front-inward position for a child who is younger than 4 months of age, as it allows your child to feel close to you. Meanwhile, the front-outward position is recommended for children between the ages of 4 months and 6 months since this is when your child learns how to hold their own neck. The back and hip carry positions shouldn’t be used until your child is 9 months or 10 months of age.

Infant hip seats work a lot like fanny packs. They wrap around the waist and sit above the hips. They also have shelf-like seats for babies. Parents who wear these carriers stabilize their sitting children with their arms.

Fanny pack baby seats encourage children to adopt the “M” sitting position, where your child’s thighs end up spreading around your torso.
